The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Coralville – The Mystery of Edwin Drood was the first Broadway musical with multiple endings! Tony-Award winner Rupert Holmes adapted the musical from Dickens’ unfinished novel, allowing the audience to vote on each performance’s ending.

Inspired by Victorian-style music hall performances, Holmes conceived his adaptation of Drood as a “show-within-a-show.” The cast, all local teens, portray music hall performers who are performing Dickens’ story – this allows for more light comedy than the novel presents, as well as some musical numbers unrelated to Drood’s story. According to Holmes, “It has the same relationship to Dickens that Kiss Me Kate does to The Taming of the Shrew.”

All this leads to a show that director Patrick Du Laney calls “rollicking, silly fun.”

Tickets ($12-$27) are available online, by phone at 319.248.9370, and in person at the CCPA box office and Coralville Rec Center.
