Amana – The Iowa Theatre Artists Company (ITAC) of Amana will present the Eastern Iowa debut of John Patrick Shanley’s Outside Mullingar from November 13 – 29 on stage at the ITAC Performing Arts Center.
Outside Mullingar premiered on Broadway in January of 2014, a production of the famed Manhattan Theatre Club. It marked Debra Messing’s Broadway debut, an actress known for her award-winning work on the popular TV series, “Will and Grace.” The play was met with critical success and was nominated for a 2014 Tony Award in the category of Best Play, as well as nominations in the same category by the Outer Critics Circle Awards and the Drama Desk Awards. It has been called “Shanley’s finest work since Doubt.
Cherryl Moon Thomason (Cedar Rapids) is directing Outside Mullingar for ITAC. Thomason, a well-known performer in the area, was seen on stage as Sister Aloysius in the John Patrick Shanley production of Doubt at TCR earlier this year. The Outside Mullingar cast includes Iowa theatre artists: Patrick Du Laney (Iowa City), Kristy Hartsgrove Mooers (Iowa City), Jim Kern (Cedar Rapids) and Meg Merckens (South Amana). Merckens, ITAC Artistic Director, chose the play “…without a moment’s hesitation after the first read. I fell in love with this valentine of a play that celebrates the family farm, family loyalties and the complexities, losses and triumphs of romance.” Thomason adds, “It’s such a wonderfully strong and loving story that will appeal to both rural and city audience members alike. The talented actors of this piece are sure to win the hearts of all those who travel to the Amana Colonies to see it.”
ITAC offers four performances each weekend beginning Friday, November 13 and closing on Sunday, November 29. The schedule includes two evening shows, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and two matinées, Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 pm, each weekend of the run. Ticket price is $25 Adult, $22.50 Senior and $10 Student (includes college/university students). A Group Rate for 10 or more is available. ITAC will also be honoring all Iowa theatre artists during the run of this show. Performers and technical artists who have worked on a show in Iowa during 2015 will receive $5 off of a regular price ticket of $25. Please give title of show and theatre name where the work was done when reserving tickets. Theatres represented at each performance will be announced prior to the show as a salute to the dedicated artists who keep “Live Theater” active and thriving in Iowa.
