Cedar Rapids – Theatre Cedar Rapids begins its 2016-17 season with a Grandon Studio production of Annie Baker’s The Flick. The show opens Friday, August 26 and runs through September 11. TCR describes the story this way:
In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.
Avery – Jubiril Awe
Rose – Claire Winkleblack
Sam – Nathan Shepard
Skylar/The Dreaming Man – David Wasserman
Fun facts you find when Googling the show:
- It won both the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2013 Obie Award for Playwriting.
- There was some controversy over the length of the show, which for past productions has clocked in at slightly more than three hours.
- As someone who once fit this description very well, I found this quote from a review of the play very amusing: “Baker has a real knack for capturing the halting, self-conscious vernacular of cerebral yet underachieving twenty-something suburbanites”.
- Steppenwolf’s production just closed in May, but who needs to go to Chicago, when we can see great theatre right here in Eastern Iowa?
There are not a lot of seats in the Grandon Studio, so I encourage you to get tickets to this show soon!
